How do I add and remove classes in Chalk?

In order to plan lessons in Planboard or create assessments in Markboard, you will need to set up your classes. You might teach Grade 11 English, Grade 10 English, and Grade 12 World History all in the same semester. These would get their own class.

To add classes within the Planboard app, continue reading below.

Adding Classes

Classes are the different subjects that you teach, for example, Math, History, and English are all classes. You need to add these to your Timetable to be able to plan lessons in Planboard and take attendance/mark students in Attendance and Markboard.

Step 1:

Open the Planboard menu at the top of the window, then click Timetable.

Step 2:

Click the + Add a Class button on the left-hand side to create a new class or non-teaching period.

Step 3:

Selecting either option will prompt you to enter a name and choose a colour for the new class. You can click on the colour picker icon for more colour options. Click Create to add this class.

Note: If you have classes created in Google Classroom or Schoology, you can import them into Planboard by following the instructions here.

Step 1:

Tap on the menu button in the top left corner, then tap on Classes.

Step 2:

Add a new class by tapping the + button in the bottom left corner.

You can change the colour of the class by tapping on the eyedropper button to the right of the class name.

Adding Sections

Sections were previously used for when teaching the same subject to the same grade but to a different group of students. For example, you might teach Grade 11 English to two different groups of students at different times. They have the same standards attached. Therefore you would have 1 Subject of Grade 11 English, but two sections within it.

Sections are no longer supported within Chalk. All classes created in Chalk are now treated as individual subjects in order to simplify the setup process for your planner. You can still create separate classes and name them "Math - Section 1" and "Math - Section 2", or "Languages - French" and "Languages - Spanish", if you wish.

If you have sections from past school years created in your account, you will still be able to access them without any changes but will be unable to create new sections for future classes.

Removing Classes

Deleting a class will delete all related items (lesson plans, assessments, units, standards, etc.).

Note: Just like with classes, deleting a section will delete all related items (lesson plans, assessments, units, standards, etc.). Since sections are no longer supported in Chalk, deleting additional sections within a class will permanently remove the ability to add sections for that class.

Step 1:

Click the Planboard menu at the top of the page, then click Timetable.

Step 2:

Hover your cursor over the class you would like to delete and click the gear icon that appears.
