Assessment for Teachers

Chapter 5: Conversations

Chalk Assessment will help your school shift from outdated evaluation to true real-time assessment strategies. Support learning growth for students with standards-based grading, online assessments and transparency with parents through student ePortfolios that capture both formative and summative assessments.

This learning guide will help familiarize you with the features of Chalk's Assessment solution for users with Teacher privileges. The Assessment solution builds on existing features within the Markboard app, however some settings will already be set by your school's administrator.

While this guide will cover many of the features available, please refer to our extensive support articles for specific questions or reach out to us at support@chalk.com or through our in-app Live Chat service (available Monday through Friday, 8am-4pm EST).

The following chapter of our learning guide will go over how to:

  • Start a conversation with students or guardians
  • Edit settings for conversations
  • Make class announcements
  • Manage notifications about on-going conversations

With Chalk Conversations, teachers can create class-level announcements, as well as have direct conversations with students and/or guardians. Teachers have full control over whether these conversations can be one-on-one in nature or involve both students and guardians. There is even the ability to attach files, which can help efficiency and understanding between teachers and the students or guardians.

Note: Your school may not have the Conversations feature enabled, therefore it may not be available.

In order for Students to have access to their Chalk accounts, they will need to verify their account with their Student Access Code. Admins should provide this to students at the beginning of the school year, but teachers can print the code off for their students as well.

How do I edit the Conversation settings for my class?

This is part of our Assessment Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

For the conversations feature, teachers can set their settings to have more control over the interactions they can have with students and guardians. This is a quick guide on how to do so!

Step 1:

Within your class on Markboard, click the Settings tab.

Step 2:

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where you will find the Conversation Settings:

You'll have two options to check so that you can toggle whether:

  • Students in this class can create posts and comment.
  • Guardians can create posts and comment.

Note: Students and guardians will always be able to view any posts or comments that have been shared with them. These settings control whether or not they can create posts or leave comments for that class.

How do I edit the Conversation settings for a student or guardian?

This is part of our Assessment Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Teachers have the power to set permissions based on individual students or guardians based on class. This can be a tool to control the flow of conversation, but also be a tool for inappropriate interactions or behaviour. This article is a quick guide on how to set student and guardian permissions.

How do I adjust the Conversation permissions?

Step 1:

Click on Settings under the Conversation tab within a student’s learning profile view in Markboard.

Step 2:

In the window that appears, you have the following options:

A) Turn on/off whether this account can post or comment. Note: This affects the student’s or guardian’s ability to create posts or comment for that specific class.

B) Turn on/off the flag on this account.

What does flagging an account do?

When an account has been flagged, they will be blocked from being able to create posts or comments in classes they have with you, but not classes they may have with other teachers. When you flag an account, you will be able to enter in a reason for the flag and optionally, you can select an administrator to notify about this issue.

Note: In the case that you have flagged an account, please follow up with your school administrator to take the necessary steps to handle the situation.

How do I make a class announcement?

This is part of our Assessment Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Announcements are a great tool to use in order to convey important information to students and guardians. Keep in mind, they cannot respond to these class announcements.

How do I create an announcement?

Step 1:

Click on Create an Announcement under the Announcements tab for a class.

Step 2:

Type in your announcement and click the Create Announcement  button. You can also upload files to the announcement that you would like your students or guardians to download.

How do I manage notifications about ongoing Conversations?

This is part of our Assessment Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

When a student or guardian replies to your announcement or conversation, you will receive an email notification, with the ability to view the conversation in Markboard, as well as an in-app notification located at the top right of your screen. Both of these options will take you to Markboard, where you can reply to conversations.

How do I view a conversation I have been notified about?

Step 1:

From the notification, click View Post.

Note: If a Student or Guardian has not verified their accounts, they will not see conversations, and you will see a message like this:
