Chapter 3: Gradebook Features

Chalk Gold is an optional premium offering for Planboard that enables you to have advanced functionalities such as custom colours, Google Classroom integration, lesson search, and more. You'll also receive one-on-one concierge support and help contribute to the development of Planboard.

This learning guide will help familiarize you with the features of the Chalk Gold subscription. While this guide will answer many common questions, please reach out to us for specific questions at support@chalk.com or through our in-app Live Chat service (available Monday through Friday, 8am-4pm EST).

The following chapter of our learning guide will go over how to:

  • Share assessments to your students in Google Classroom
  • Sync and send grades to your students in Google Classroom
  • Use standards-based grading for your assessments

Linking Subjects

Step 1:

Navigate to the Subjects page by clicking the gear icon in the top-right corner, then clicking Subjects.

Step 2:

Click the unlinked icon to the right of the subject you want to link, then select the source you want to import subjects from.

Step 3:

Follow the instructions to sign into your Google or Schoology account.

Step 4:

After signing into your Google or Schoology account, you can select which classes to link from the drop-down menu, as shown below. You can link multiple subjects to the same Google Classroom or Schoology course, but cannot link multiple classes to the same subject.

Step 5:

Once you have linked all necessary sections within your subject, click Save. You will see the icon on the Subjects page in Chalk will display the number of linked classes (a maximum of one per section).

Unlinking Subjects

Step 1:

Navigate to the Subjects page by clicking the gear icon in the top-right corner, then clicking Subjects.

Step 2:

Click the linked icon to the right of the subject you want to unlink, then select the source you want to unlink.

Step 3:

In the following window, you can click the Unlink this class button to remove the link, or you can select a different class to link to from the drop-down menu. Click Save when finished to save your changes.

Syncing Students

If changes are made to your student roster in Google Classroom (such as students being transferred in or out of your class), you can sync your list of students in Markboard to ensure the student lists match between these applications.

To find out how to import your student roster into Markboard from Google Classroom, please read this support article.

Note: Importing students from Schoology is not yet available.

Step 1:

Within Markboard, select the subject that you would like to sync students for, then click the Students tab.

Step 2:

Click the Sync Students button in the top-right corner.

Note: If you do not see this button, your subject has not yet been linked to a class in Google Classroom, and you can follow the instructions in this support article to link your subject and import your student roster from Google Classroom.

Step 3:

The following window will display any differences between your student rosters in Markboard and Google Classroom.

From here you can import missing students from Google Classroom by selecting the checkboxes to the right of the student names. If a student is on your roster in Markboard that is not in your Google Classroom, you can link them to an existing student in Google Classroom or unenroll them from your subject in Markboard.

Step 4:

Click Save when finished.

Unlinking Students

Note: Importing students from Schoology is not yet available.

Step 1:

Within Markboard, select the subject that you would like to sync students for, then click the Students tab.

Step 2:

Click the linked icon to the right of the student you want to unlink.

Step 3:

Confirm that you have read the warning message by checking the box, then click Yes, Unlink.

Step 4:

The student will be unlinked from this Google Classroom, and the icon next to their name will be changed to reflect this.

Note: You can click the unlinked icon to link this student to another student in Google Classroom, or to unenroll them from this subject.

How do I share assessments to Google Classroom?

This is a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

If you have linked your subject and students to an existing Google Classroom, you will be able to share an assessment you've created in Chalk as an assignment in Google Classroom, and can send your grades to students directly through Chalk. This support article will show you how to share an assessment to Google Classroom.

Step 1:

Navigate to the Assessments page for your subject in Markboard. From here you have three options for how to send an existing assessment to Google Classroom.

Option 1:

Hover your cursor over an assessment and click the three-dots menu that appears, then click Share in Google.

Option 2:

Open the assessment's settings by hovering your cursor over the assessment and clicking the gear icon.

From the assessment settings window, click the Post Assignment button.

Option 3:

Click on an assessment to be taken to its grading page. From here you can click Share in Google in the top-right corner.

Step 2:

All above options will open the "Share Assessment to Google Classroom" window. From here you can edit the name, "out of" marks, due date, instructions and select attachments from your assessment to be posted to Google Classroom. Click Publish when done.

Step 3:

Your assignment has been posted to Google Classroom!

You can click the View button to be taken to its page in Google Classroom.

Step 4:

If you would like to add more attachments or edit the grade category, topic, assigned students, or due date, you can open the three-dots menu in Google Classroom and click Edit. Please note that you cannot make changes to these options from Chalk.

How do I return my students' grades to Google Classroom?

This is a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

If you have linked your subject and students to an existing Google Classroom, you will be able to share an assessment you've created in Chalk as an assignment in Google Classroom, and can send your grades to students directly through Chalk. This support article will show you how to return grades for an assignment that has been shared to Google Classroom.

Step 1:

Navigate to the Assessments page for your subject in Markboard, then click on the assessment you want to return grades for.

Step 2:

Click the Return Grades button in the top-right corner.

Step 3:

This may take up to a minute to send, but you will receive a message in the bottom-left corner of your browser when the grades have been returned.

Step 4:

If you make any changes to your students' grades, you can send the updated grades by clicking the Return Grades button again. Hovering your cursor over the button will remind you of the most recent date when grades were sent.

Note: You can also send grades from the assessment's settings window, which you can access through the gear icon on an assessment.

How do I assess standards when grading an assessment?

This is part of our Assessment Solution and a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

This article will show you how to measure your student's progress against standards and expectations.

Step 1:

Navigate to the individual assessment or gradebook entry page that you want to grade by clicking on the card or by clicking on the name in the table view.

Step 2:

To begin grading click on a student cell to display the grading options available.

Step 3:

After adding the overall score based on the gradebook entry type (see this article for more information), click the Standards tab.

Step 4:

This will let you assess the student's standard proficiency for that specific assessment or gradebook entry. By hovering over the standard number, you will see a description of the standard.

Step 5:

You can mark the student as having met the standard, being under-level or not having met the standard.

Step 6:

Once you're done, click the on next student cell to assess their standards proficiency.

When you've completed use the back arrow at the top left corner of the screen to return to the Markboard home page.

How do I view standards proficiency for a specific student?

This is part of our Assessment Solution and a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Step 1:

To begin, head to the Students tab in Markboard.

Step 2:

Click on the student that you'd like to view.

Step 3:

Click on the Standards tab.

Step 4:

From here, you will see a list of curriculum standards that this student has been assessed on, as well as an indication of their progress towards meeting the standard.

By default, this will show an average of all assessments and gradebook entries, in order of highest to lowest proficiency. To filter these, or to sort in order of lowest to highest proficiency, use the menus at the top. You can also search for a specific standard.

Clicking on a standard will pull up a description of the standard, the activities that have assessed this standard, and the student's proficiency on this standard for each assessment or gradebook entry.

To view standards proficiency for other students, just click on their names to the left!

How do I view standards proficiency for my whole class?

This is part of our Assessment Solution and a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Step 1:

To begin, head to the Insight tab in Markboard.

You can also reach this page by opening the Markboard menu at the top of the page, then clicking Insight.

Step 2:

Here you will see a list of all the standards that have been assessed so far in this class.

By clicking Most Met in the top right, you can change the order in which standards are shown.

Step 3:

You can also search for a standard in the top left.

Step 4:

Clicking on the standard will give you a description of the standard, and a detailed breakdown of those students have met the standard, those who are below level, those who have not met the standard, and those who have not yet been assessed on this standard.

Step 5:

Clicking on a student's name will show you the assessments and gradebook entries that this student has been graded on the standard, as well as their proficiency on that assessment or gradebook entry.

Step 6:

You can also change whether this standards proficiency breakdown is using all available assessments and gradebook entries, or showing the best or average of the most recent of these.
