Chapter 3: Monitoring Lesson Plan Activities

Instruction connects you and your colleagues, allowing you to share lessons, assessments, and other resources. Create sharing groups and share across a department, grade level, or your entire school.

This learning guide will help familiarize you with the features of the Instruction solution for users with Administrator privileges. If you want to learn how to take advantage of this solution as a teacher, please see our Lesson Planner Guide.

How do I give lesson feedback?

This is part of our Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

As educators, teachers understand the value in feedback, but schools don’t always have the time to sit in-class for live coaching. This article is a quick guide on how Admins can give feedback on lesson plans via the Lesson Feedback feature in the Instruction Solution. 

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Give Lesson Feedback.

Step 2 (Optional): 

If you have Schools or Groups in your institution, select the School or Group you would like to review via the drop-down menus in the top right-hand corner of the page. If your institution does not use Schools or Groups, move on to the next step.

Step 3: 

You can view lesson feedback by Month, Week, or Day. This article will display steps for the Day view tab, so click Day as pictured below.

Step 4:

Select a teacher from the list. You will be able to see how many out of their total lessons have already received feedback. As the screenshot below shows, the first teacher has 10 planned lessons total but 0 have received feedback. 

Note: The lesson activity will default to the Planned a Lesson criteria, but you can also leave feedback on empty lessons.

Step 6: 

When a teacher is selected, you will be able to view all of their lessons for the day by scrolling. This is similar to what the teacher sees in Day view of the lesson planner. Select the Leave Feedback button at the top of the lesson.

Step 7:

The lesson to review will expand to a larger view. On the right-hand side you will be able to review any feedback given, as well as any extra lesson details. Select the Leave Feedback button.

Step 8:

The text box will then appear to write any feedback you would like to provide. You may also upload any files that you would like to send the teacher. Select Send Feedback to save any comments. The teacher will then receive a notification to review what has been sent to them.

How do I monitor lesson activity through the Month View?

This is part of our Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Knowing how your teachers are planning their lessons is a powerful tool for admins. The Lesson Feedback feature tracks information on six different Lesson Activities. These criteria are:  

  • Planned a Lesson: Meaning the teacher selected has planned at least one lesson
  • With Feedback: Meaning the teachers selected have received feedback at least once
  • Attached a Unit: Teachers that have attached a unit to at least one lesson
  • Attached a Standard: Teachers that have attached a standard to at least one lesson
  • Imported a Lesson: Teachers that have imported at least one lesson from a colleague
  • Shared a Lesson: Teachers that have shared at least one lesson

This article is a quick guide on how to review these lesson activities via the Month view in the Lesson Feedback feature.

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Give Lesson Feedback.

Step 2 (Optional): 

If you have Schools or Groups in your institution, select the School or Group you would like to review via the drop-down menus in the top right-hand corner of the page. If your institution does not use Schools or Groups, move on to the next step.

Step 3: 

Select the Month view tab. 

Step 4:

Select a Lesson Activity to review. All activities are displayed as a percentage of the school and/or group you’ve selected. The listed activities on the left show the value for the entire month. To see a specific activity broken down by date, select it from the list and you will see the specific date results within the calendar. 

Note: For a quick explanation or reminder to what each criteria is tracking, you can hover over the ? tool tip icon, as shown below.

Step 5:

For a more detailed breakdown of a specific date, click the date within the calendar. Here you will see a list of the teachers within the School or Group you're reviewing, and exactly which criteria were completed for the Lesson Activities. 

Step 6: 

In order to view the entire day of a particular teacher, select their name. This will bring you to the day view of the teacher to review in more detail.

How do I monitor lesson activity through the Week View?

Week view within Admin's Feedback feature is a powerful tool to review how your teachers are lesson planning. This article will give you a quick overview on how to view and use the Week view.

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Give Lesson Feedback.

Step 2 (Optional): 

If you have Schools or Groups in your institution, select the School or Group you would like to review via the drop-down menus in the top right-hand corner of the page. If your institution does not use Schools or Groups, move on to the next step.

Step 3: 

Select the Week view tab.

Step 4:

Here you will be able to see a list of the teachers in your institution or the Group or School selected. Select the name of the teacher whose week you would like to view.

Note: The lesson activity will default to the Planned a Lesson criteria, but you can also leave feedback on empty lessons. The screenshot below is what a teacher with all of their lessons planned looks like.

Another example would be the screenshot below, where only some of the lessons have been planned for the week. 

Step 5:

Select the Criteria dropdown in order to change which Lesson Activity you would like to review. These criteria are:  

  • Planned a Lesson: Teacher have planned at least one lesson
  • With Feedback: Teachers have received feedback at least once
  • Attached a Unit: Teachers have attached a unit to at least one lesson
  • Attached a Standard: Teachers have attached a standard to at least one lesson
  • Imported a Lesson: Teachers have imported at least one lesson from a colleague
  • Shared a Lesson: Teachers have shared at least one lesson 

Step 6: 

Click the lesson to view the lesson in more detail, including the lesson plan. To leave feedback, select the Leave Feedback button.

How do I review lesson feedback that has already been given?

This is part of our Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

Being able to review lesson feedback that has been given to a teacher is valuable when it comes to coaching. This article is a quick guide on how to view the feedback history that has been given to a teacher within your Institution, and to filter the organization of the feedback to review. 

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Give Lesson Feedback.

Step 2: 

Select the Group or School you would like to review. This will help filter your content so it is more searchable and organized. 

Step 3: 

Select the Timeline tab. Here you will be able to select a particular teacher to view the history of feedback given to them. On the right-hand side, you can filter feedback by date range, author (the admin who gave the feedback), as well as section (individual subject or section the teacher has).

How do I view a teacher's account?

This is part of our Chalk Solutions. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

The ability to view a teacher's account can allow admins to review standards coverage, edit grades and attendance, or even view lessons in situations that may involve a substitute teacher. This article is a quick guide on how to view a teachers account.

Note: Only users with the Lesson Reviewer role can view teacher accounts and leave lesson feedback.

From Lesson Feedback

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Give Lesson Feedback.

Step 2 (Optional): 

If you have Schools or Groups in your institution, select the School or Group you would like to review via the drop-down menus in the top right-hand corner of the page. If your institution does not use Schools or Groups, move on to the next step.

Step 3:

Select a teacher from the list using one of the available Lesson Feedback views, then click the View Account button next to their name.

Step 4:

You're now viewing the teacher's account!

Click the Back to Admin button in the top-right corner to return to the Admin view.

From the Organization Settings

Step 1: 

Open the Admin menu at the top of the page, then click Organization Settings.

Step 2: 

Select the user whose account you would like to view and click the expand icon to the left of their email. 

Step 3: 

In the window that appears, click the View Account button under the name of the teacher.

Step 4:

You're now viewing the teacher's account!

Click the Back to Admin button in the top-right corner to return to the Admin view.
