Instruction for Teachers

Chapter 1: Sharing Through Resources

Chalk Instruction connects you and your colleagues, allowing you to share lessons, assessments, and other resources. Create sharing groups and share across a department, grade level, or your entire school.

This learning guide will help familiarize you with the features of Chalk's Instruction solution for users with Teacher privileges.

The Instruction solution builds on existing features within the Planboard app. Before learning about the collaborative features of this solution, make sure to read through our Planboard Learning Guide.

While this guide will cover many of the features available, please refer to our extensive support articles for specific questions or reach out to us at support@chalk.com or through our in-app Live Chat service (available Monday through Friday, 8am-4pm EST).

The following chapter of our learning guide will go over how to:

  • Log into your account for the first time
  • Navigate and use Chalk Resources
  • Share and save lessons
  • Import lessons into Planboard
  • Share lessons with non-Chalk users
  • Share lessons to Google Classroom

How do I log onto Chalk for the first time as a teacher?

This is part of our Chalk Solutions. This will be different if you are a free user.

To login to your Chalk account for the first time, you have two options: through email or through Chalk.com. Continue reading down below to learn how.

Option 1: Through Email

Step 1:

When your admin has invited you to join your school's Chalk Institution you will receive an email. Select Click here to get started to be brought to the account set-up step.

Option 2: Using Chalk.com

Step 1:

Visit the Chalk log-in page! You can find the log in button on the Chalk website in the top right-hand corner.

Step 2:

Use your email and your password to log into your account. If you haven't setup a password yet, go ahead and leave that spot blank and simply click login to get into your account.

Note: If you have any trouble, you can use the 'I forgot my password!' link and enter the email associated with your account. This will send you an email with a link to get your password set and give you access to your account.

Hint! Check the Stay Logged In check box to prevent having to log in every time you need to access Chalk.

Step 3:

Confirm your account information by setting your first and last name, your school email address and the password you would like to set for your account.

Select Continue and you will be brought to the next step of getting started with your account.

How do I use Chalk Resources?

Resources is a section within Chalk where you can save or share lessons or lesson groups to use at a later date.

If your School has a paid Solution subscription with Chalk, you'll also be able to share and import lessons and lesson groups from your peers. This article will help you navigate and use Resources to its full extent!

Navigating to Resources

Click the Resources button in the menu bar at the top of the page.

Searching for Lessons

On the Resources page, you’ll be able to sort through shared resources by "Everything" to see all content, "Shared with me" to see lessons shared directly to you, or search by selecting the Groups that you belong to.

Note: Schools with a Chalk Paid Subscription have the ability to create multiple Sharing groups within their school or district.

Selecting any of these will modify the selection of Lesson Plans or Lesson Groups that show up in the menu. You can also search via the Search Bar at the top by title of lesson or tags attached to the lessons.

Lesson Information

When you select a lesson plan or lesson group more information will appear about the lesson on the left-hand side of the screen. This will tell you the title, who the lesson has been shared with, the tags and also allow you to preview the lesson.

How do I save and share lesson plans with Resources?

Note: You may only share lessons if your School has a paid Solution subscription with Chalk.

Step 1:

Open a lesson via Day or Week view that you would like to share.

Step 2:

Select the Share button within the lesson window.

Step 3:

Type your colleague's email address and click Share. This will send the lesson plan to their Resources

Bonus! You can save your lessons in your own Resources for future use by sharing with yourself. To do this, simply enter the email address attached to your Planboard account!

Note: If the teacher you share with is at the same school, you will see their name to share with.

Note: You may only share if your School has a paid Solution subscription with Chalk.

Step 1:

Open the Week or Month View in Planboard, and at the top right of Planboard, select the Share button.

Step 2:

Select a Subject or Section from the drop down menu. After loading, you will see all of the lessons you have planned within the start and end dates selected. You can adjust these dates to include more lessons.

  • Create a name for your group of lesson.
  • Use the tick boxes beside each lesson title to select which lessons to include in the shared group.

Click Share to proceed to the next step.

Step 3:

Type the names, groups, or email addresses of the people you would like to share your lesson with. If you'd like to save them for yourself, simply enter your own email address (the one attached to your Planboard account). If the teacher you share with is part of your school's Grandfathered Collaborate group or their paid Chalk subscription, the lesson will be sent to their Chalk Resources. If you are sharing with yourself, the lessons will be sent to your Chalk Resources.

Hint!: For easy organizing within Resources, add Lesson Plan Tags

How do I remove a saved or shared lesson from Resources?

Sometimes you no longer need to share a resource, or you've made personal changes to a lesson that your colleagues don't need access to. Here are the simple steps to removing a lesson you've shared.

Note: You may only share if your School has a paid Solution subscription with Chalk. Otherwise Resources is simply a database for your saved lessons.

Step 1:

Find your lesson within Resources.

Step 2:

Select Share in the Lesson Information on the side.

Step 3:

In the bottom right corner of the pop up, you'll see the Unshare button. Click this.

Step 4:

Make sure to read the warning in full. If you do wish to prevent the lesson from being accessible to other teachers in the future, proceed and you're done!

This article will show you how to generate a public link of your Week View that you can share with non-Chalk users. Anyone with the public link will be able to see all lessons for the chosen week, as well as any saved changes made to the original lessons. Sticky notes are not visible to people who access the public link.

Note: Please be mindful not to include information in your lesson plans that you don't want others to access.

Step 1:

From the Week View in Planboard, click the Share button in the top-right corner of the window.

Step 2:

In the sharing window that pops up, click on the Public Link tab.

Step 3:

How do I share my lesson plans to Google Classroom?

This is a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers and teachers whose schools are subscribed to the Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

This article will show you how to share lessons from Planboard to your existing Google Classroom. The lessons will be added as a public link, and any saved changes made to the original lessons will be viewable by the students in your Google Classroom. You can share either single lessons, a day's worth of lessons, or a week's worth of lessons for all subjects.

Please complete your Google Classroom setup before attempting to share lessons through Planboard.

Note: If sharing a Day or Week's worth of lessons, anyone with the public link will be able to see all lessons for the chosen timeframe. Please be mindful not to include information in your lesson plans that you don't want others to access.

Step 1:

The first step to sharing to Google Classroom depends on how many lessons you wish to share.

To share a single lesson: Navigate to the lesson you wish to share to Google Classroom from any view in Planboard. Open the lesson and click the Options drop-down menu in the lesson editor, then click on Classroom.

Note: Don't worry, you will still be able to review and edit this information before it posts to your Google Classroom.

Step 3:

In the pop-up window, log in to your Google Account with your credentials. If you have browser cookies enabled, you will not need to log in each time you share a lesson to Google Classroom.

Click Next to continue.

Step 4:

Your lesson will be attached to the post under "Materials", and the information you entered in Step 2 will already be filled in for the appropriate fields.

When you have finished entering the information you want to send to your Google Classroom, click Post.

Optional: You can schedule your lesson to be posted at a particular time by clicking on the three dots in the top-right corner of the window, then clicking Schedule.

Select the date and time you would like your lesson to be made available to your students, then click Schedule to finish.
