Lesson Planner Guide

Chapter 5: Sharing and Feedback

The Instruction Solution connects you and your colleagues, allowing you to share lessons, assessments, and other resources. Create sharing groups and share across a department, grade level, or your entire school.

This learning guide will help familiarize you with the features of the Instruction solution for users with Teacher privileges. The features described in this chapter are not available for free teacher accounts.

While this guide will cover many of the features available, please refer to our extensive support articles for specific questions or reach out to us at support@chalk.com or through our Live Chat service (available Monday through Friday, 8am-4pm EST).

The following chapter of our learning guide will go over how to:

  • Navigate and use Resources
  • Share lessons with other teachers
  • Share lessons to Schoology
  • Review lesson feedback that has been left for you

How do I use Resources?

Resources is a section within your account where you can save or share lessons or lesson groups to use at a later date.

If your school or team has a paid subscription with Chalk, you'll also be able to share and import lessons and lesson groups from your peers. This article will help you navigate and use Resources to its full extent!

Navigating to Resources

Click the Resources button in the menu bar at the top of the page.

Searching for Lessons

On the Resources page, you’ll be able to sort through shared resources by "Everything" to see all content, "Shared with me" to see lessons shared directly to you, or search by selecting the Groups that you belong to.

Note: Schools with a paid subscription have the ability to create multiple sharing groups within their school or district.

Selecting any of these will modify the selection of lesson plans or lesson groups that show up in the menu. You can also search via the search bar at the top by title of lesson or tags attached to the lessons.

Lesson Information

When you select a lesson plan or lesson group more information will appear about the lesson on the left-hand side of the screen. This will tell you the title, who the lesson has been shared with, the tags and also allow you to preview the lesson.

Helpful Tip: For easy organizing within Resources, add tags to your lessons. You and your colleagues will be able to search by tags to effectively sort your lessons. You can edit the tags when sharing your lessons, or when editing your shared lessons in Resources as shown below.

How do I save and share multiple lesson plans with Resources?

This article will show you how to share groups of lessons using resources. You can share lessons to another teacher’s account or save them to your own Resources.

Note: You may only share if your school or team has a paid subscription with Chalk.

Step 1:

From the Day or Week Planner, click the Share button next to the date, then click Add to Resources.

Alternatively, you can click the Share button within the lesson editor, then click the Group of Lessons tab.

Step 2:

Select a class from the drop-down menu. After loading, you will see all of the lessons you have planned within the start and end dates selected. You can adjust these dates to include more lessons.

  • Create a name for your group of lesson.
  • Use the tick boxes beside each lesson title to select which lessons to include in the shared group.

Click Share to proceed to the next step.

Step 3:

Type the names, groups, or email addresses of the people you would like to share your lesson with. If the teacher you share with is part of your school or Chalk Team, the lesson will be sent to their Resources. If you are sharing with yourself, the lessons will be sent to your Resources.

You can also enter the name of your school, group or team into the sharing field to share the lesson with all members. The lessons would be shared with all active members, so you won't need to share them again with any team members who join your team in the future.

If you'd like to save them for yourself, simply simply click the Add to Resources button in the bottom-left corner of the window.

Helpful Tip: For easy organizing within Resources, add tags to your lessons before sharing. You and your colleagues will be able to search by tags to effectively sort your lessons. You can edit the tags on your lesson group at any time by editing your shared lessons in Resources.

Step 4:

Click Share to send the lesson plans and you're done!

How do I leave comments on a shared lesson in Resources?

If your school or team has a paid subscription with Chalk, you can use Resources as a collaborative space to share and comment on lesson plans with your colleagues. This article will show you how to leave comments on lessons that have been shared with you through Resources.

Step 1:

Navigate to the Resources app and select a lesson or lesson group from the list.

Step 2:

You will see the commenting field in the informational panel that appears on the right side of the screen.

You can also access comments when previewing or editing a lesson or lesson group, as shown below.

For lesson groups, you can toggle between viewing the comments or list of lessons in the group.

Step 3:

Type into this field to leave messages or feedback for your colleagues. Hit enter on your keyboard to leave the comment on the lesson or lesson group.

Anyone who has shared access to the lessons can leave comments. Use comments to give feedback, coordinate resources, or otherwise connect with your colleagues directly in Chalk!

Note: Comments are only visible when viewing saved or shared lessons in Resources. They are not displayed when sharing lessons through public links.

Step 1:

The first step to sharing a public link depends on what kind of public link you wish to share.

To share lessons for a specific day: Navigate to the date you wish to share from the Day Planner. Click the Share button next to the date, then click Public Link.

To share lessons for a specific week: Navigate to the week you wish to share from the Week Planner, click the Share button next to the date, then click Public Link.

To share lessons for an entire semester: Navigate to the Semesters page by clicking the Lessons menu at the top of the page, then clicking Semesters.

Hover your cursor over the semester you wish to share and click the Share Lessons icon, as shown below.

Step 2:

On the Public Link window that appears, you will see a generated link that you can copy and share with anyone you choose. Click Copy to save it to your device's clipboard.

You can click on the drop-down menu under "Show" to select which classes will be visible from this public link. You can also disable access to the link by clicking the green button above the link.

Please note that these settings only apply to the particular day, week or semester you are sharing, and you cannot produce multiple links for the same time frame.

Step 3:

When people navigate to this link in their browsers, they will be able to see your shared day's, week's, or semester's lessons, including attachments, embedded videos and assigned standards.

How do I share my lesson plans to Schoology?

This is a feature available to Chalk Gold subscribers and teachers whose schools are subscribed to the Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

This article will show you how to share lessons from your planner to your existing Schoology courses. The lessons can be added as a public link, with any saved changes made to the original lessons viewable by the students in your Schoology course, or can be directly embedded in your course materials.

Please complete your Schoology setup before attempting to share lessons through the lesson planner.

If you are just getting started, you can import your courses from Schoology by following these instructions.

Note: You can share either single lessons, a day's worth of lessons, or a week's worth of lessons for all subjects to Schoology. If sharing a day or week's worth of lessons, you can select which subjects are visible by editing the Public Link settings for each given day or week. Please be mindful not to include information in your lesson plans that you don't want others to access.

Step 1:

Navigate to the lesson you wish to share to Schoology from any view in your planner. Open the lesson and click the Share button in the lesson editor, then click on the Schoology tab.

Step 2:

Click Sign in with Schoology and follow the instructions to access your account. You will not need to perform this step if your subjects are already linked to Schoology.

Step 3:

Select which Schoology course you want to share to, then use the drop-down menu to select whether you would like to share the lesson as a material or update for your students.

Step 4:

If you are uploading the lesson as an update, you can enter a title and message to be displayed with the lesson. The lesson will be added to the update as an attachment. Click Post Update when finished.

If you are uploading the lesson as a material, you can enter a title and then click Add to Materials. You will then need to select which folder to save your lesson to. Click Add It Here when finished.

Step 5:

Your lesson has now been posted to your Schoology! You can click the "View" button to open a browser tab to see your Schoology post.

How do I review past feedback that has been left for me?

This is part of our Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

This article will guide you on where you can review past feedback within the lesson planner, in order to review what has been said and implement it in your planning for the future!

Step 1:

Open the Lessons menu at the top of the page, then click Lesson Feedback.

Step 2:

This will bring you to the Feedback page within your account. It will automatically have a feed of the most recent feedback left for you.

Step 3:

You may filter the feedback you're viewing on the side. The first dropdown option will show the semester you're viewing. If you select this, you will see the other semesters in your account as well. You will also be able to filter by classes you teach.

Step 4:

You may also filter your feedback by a date range, or a specific admin who authored the feedback.

Step 5:

To view the specific lesson plan that an admin has reviewed, select the View Lesson button to open it within a pop-up window.

How do I know if an Admin has left feedback for me?

This is part of our Instruction Solution. You will not have this option if you are a free user.

In order to utilize the feedback given to them, teachers will be notified when an Admin has sent them feedback. This article is a quick overview on how you can see if an Admin has left feedback for you.

Email Notification

Step 1:

If your email preferences are set to allow Feedback notifications, you will receive an email notifying you of which lesson has been commented on by the Admin. As you can see below, William has commented on my lesson for September 4th.

Note: You may edit your email preferences via your profile settings here. Remember you will not receive Feedback Notification emails if you have unsubscribed from them.

Step 2:

Click the View Lesson Feedback in Planboard button. This will take you directly to the feedback and the lesson associated with it.

Notification Icon

Step 1:

In the application, you will notice that the bell icon in the top right corner has changed to notify you.

Step 2:

Clicking the icon will allow you to see the most recent notifications. Select View Feedback.

Step 3:

Here you will be taken directly to the feedback and the lesson associated to it.
