Lesson Planner Guide
Chapter 4: A New School Year
The Planner makes it simple to get organized and reduce your classroom prep time. Accessible from anywhere, you can plan lessons, align to standards, and manage your schedule with ease. Best of all, it’s free for individual teachers.
You loved the planner last year and now you're preparing for a new school year. We are here to help you! This quick guide will allow you to maximize your planner potential for the upcoming semester.
The first thing you will need to do is create a new semester, beginning on the first day of your school year, and ending whenever your semester ends. Depending on whether or not you have the same classes and timetable, you will have to choose either to create a brand new semester or to reuse content from a past semester. You can name it whatever you’d like, but make sure it’s easy to distinguish from your previous semester.
The following articles will help you optimize your semester's set up process, and will go over how to:
- Reuse a past semester's timetable
- Reuse content from a previous semester
- View lessons from a previous semester
- Save lesson plans to Resources for future use
Note: If you want to reuse lesson plan content from last year, please use your web browser, as this feature is not yet available for mobile.
How do I reuse a past semester's content?
Sometimes when you start a new school year, your timetable looks similar or maybe even the same as past school years you've taught. You can re-create an existing semester's timetable and classes to help save you valuable time in your year over year setup. Copying a previous semester will also reassign any lesson templates, standards, and curriculum maps that were previously assigned to those classes, and you will have the option to copy over lesson and assessment content as well.
The following support article will show you how to copy a previous semester when creating a new planner. For information on how to copy all lesson, unit or assessment content from one class to another, please read this support article.
Step 1:
Open the Lessons menu at the top of the page, then click Semesters.
Step 2:
This will bring you to the Semesters page, where you can see the list of your previous semesters. Click the + Add Semester button.
Step 3:
Fill out the form with the appropriate data, including the name of your new semester and the start and end dates. Click Next when finished.
Step 4:
You will be given an option to create a new semester or copy a previous semester. Click on the Copy a previous semester option.
At the bottom, there will be a drop down menu for you to select the previous semester with the classes and timetable you would like to copy. Select a semester, then click Next.
Step 5:
Select which classes to be copied into your new semester and whether or not to copy over units, lessons, or assessment data. You can find more information about what can be copied over below.
Step 6:
Click Create and it will begin the copying process for the classes and materials you specified.
The copy will continue after you close this window, so you may perform other actions in your account while it processes. You may even edit your Timetable for the new semester to accommodate changes in your schedule, but any edits made to lessons or assessments while copying takes place may result in an unsuccessful copy.
Step 7:
You will receive a notification when the content has finished copying!
The following content will be copied over:
If including units...
- Units and their content
- Assigned standards
- Attached curriculum maps (if your school is subscribed to our Curriculum solution)
If including lessons...
- Lesson plan content
- Lesson plan attachments
- Assigned standards
- If also copying units, any units assigned to lessons
If including assessments…
- ‘Out of’ mark
- Assessment weight
- All Categories from the original section are brought over, and categories existing in the new section will get overwritten.
- Original due dates will remain the same (remember to change due dates only once the assessments have been copied over successfully).
- If your school is subscribed to our Assessment solution, you will have the option to change the visibility on assessments so that they do not appear in student and guardian feeds.
Note: Students will not be copied over with assessments, but can be enrolled through the class list in the Gradebook.

How do I create a lesson plan within Resources?
You may want to create a lesson plan outside of your current timetable and not associated with a schedule. Perhaps you have a new class next term and want to create material ahead of time or maybe your role is within the district and you create reusable lesson content for other teachers to import and use within their class.
Step 1:
Click Resources in the menu bar at the top of the page. Resources is where you will find all of the Lessons, Lesson Groups and other items that have been shared to you or that you have shared to others. To learn more about lesson sharing, see this link.
Step 2:
In Resources, you can browse shared lessons, search for reusable items shared to you and create new reusable lessons to share with others. Click the Create a Lesson button.
Give your new lesson a title and select whether you want to begin with a template or start fresh with a blank page.
Step 3:
The final step is to add content to your new shared lesson plan. This is done the same way as in other areas of the lesson planner -- simply add text, images, video or other elements to the editing canvas. Don’t forget to add attachments from your computer or from Google Drive or link to external sites or resources on the internet if appropriate.
Just as with other shared lessons you can import your new lesson into specific classes on your schedule. Either overwrite or shift existing lessons to accommodate your new lesson and you’re done.
Of course you don’t have to import your new shared lessons right away. You can plan lessons directly within Resources and then, when ready, import them to your planner to associate with relevant standards and curriculum.

How do I import lessons into my planner from Resources?
This article will help you import saved or shared lesson plans from Resources into your planner!
Note: Sharing with your peers is only a feature if your school or team has a paid subscription with Chalk. Otherwise you will be importing lessons from your own saved lesson plans.
Step 1:
Click the Resources button in the menu bar at the top of the page. You can also access this page by clicking the Import button from within the lesson editor.
Step 2:
Once in Resources, you can search for your lessons in a few different places. By selecting your Groups, you will view lessons shared within your district, school or team that you belong to as a whole. You can select “Everything” to see all lessons you have access to, “Shared with me” to see lessons shared directly to you, or search by selecting the Groups that you belong to.
Step 3:
Once you’ve found the lesson plan or lesson group you’re looking to import, more information will appear about the lesson on the right-hand side of the screen. This will tell you who the lesson has been shared with, the title and allow you to preview the lesson before you import it.
Select Import on the lesson plan.
Step 4:
Choose the calendar date of the lesson plan in your planner you would like to import the shared lesson to.
Step 5:
Select the class that you would like to import the lesson plan to.
Step 6:
If your target lesson plan is currently empty, you will skip to the next step. If the lesson date you are importing to already has content, you will need to decide whether you would like to append, shift or overwrite the current content on that date.
Append will add your imported lesson content after the existing content in your target lesson. Shift will move the content and all of the future content for that subject or section forward one day. Overwrite will replace the content in your planner for that date and class, which will delete the content already there and cannot be undone.
After making your selection, click Confirm.
Step 7:
You’re done! A confirmation window will appear, and you can click View It Now to be taken to the imported lesson in your planner.
Step 1:
From the Day View or from within editing a lesson, open the options menu and select the Import Lesson option.
